ll archives: How to Furnish Your Office for Free
Can I let you in on a little secret? I furnished my office (and most of our house) almost entirely from Craigslist for FREE. If you’ve never shopped the Craigslist Free section, I’m about to introduce you to the budget savvy shopper’s paradise. But first, before I give away all of my tactics, let me show you how to get to the best kept secret section of Craigslist.
Getting to the FREE Section of Craigslist
Go to the Craigslist website ----> Find the State you live in ----> Click on the city you live in or the city nearest you ---> Look for the column that says “for sale”---> Click on “free”---> Browse the items and make sure you refresh every 10 minutes or so, so that you won’t miss out when new items are posted.
[ PRO Tip: Large metropolitan cities typically have the best free offerings. If you don’t live in a big city, don’t worry! Look at what the cities near you have to offer. Sometimes, you’ll find an item that is worth the trip! ]
Okay now that you’ve found the site, here are some tips to make sure you don’t miss out on the good stuff. When snagging amazing items from Craigslist Free, time is of the essence because people (like me) stalk Craigslist and respond FAST. If you don’t inquire about the item within the first 20 minutes, it’s probably too late. Here are some tips you can use to increase your chances of getting the goods:
Have a draft e-mail ready. Oh yes, it is that serious. When you only have a few minutes to respond, having a draft e-mail ready to go is a major-saver. You just need the key elements of the e-mail drafted up and you can fill in the rest depending on what item you are asking for.
Here is an example that you can copy, paste, customize and save in your e-mail drafts:
Hi! I’m interested in the _________ you posted on Craigslist. I can pick it up ASAP. What time is good for you?
Kendra B. (Insert cell number here)
A few key points when drafting the message:
- Make your subject line stand out. The person who posted the items is about to get bombarded with responses, make sure yours stands out from the crowd. Try subject lines like: “West Elm Table Please!” or “Pottery Barn Mirror-VERY Interested!”
- It should be short and to the point. Time is of the essence. People are usually in a hurry to get rid of the items and don’t have time to read long messages.
- Include a telephone number where they can reach you. Make it easy for them to contact you, don’t make them ask for your contact information- give it up front.
Use every form of contact possible. Yep, go into complete stalker mode and send an e-mail, text and call them if possible. Often times, you can only reply to the e-mail provided in the listing, but some people will post their phone numbers as well.
[PRO Tip: The best days to search Craigslist are the last 2-3 days of the month because that’s when people are moving out and need to get rid of stuff quickly.]
Now that you have all the insider tips on how to get amazing furniture and accessories for free, get out there and stalk shop Craigslist! I’d love to hear about what goodies you find! Use hashtag #ImACraigslistPRO to share!
