Current location: I currently reside in Mankato, Minnesota.
Where are you from? I am originally from Tucson, Arizona, but moved in first grade to the tundra of Andover, Minnesota, which I have called home for most of my life.
Education: I am currently a senior at Minnesota State University, Mankato studying Public Relations and Creative Writing.
Business & Formal Title: Founder + Creative Director of exPRession PR
What is exPRession PR? exPRession PR is a career focused blog devoted to arming right-brained young professionals with tips + tricks to launch them into success. My brand is dedicated to helping others make a splash with their brand in creative + innovative ways. My brand is in its baby stage as I just launched February 17th, so I can’t wait to see what is in store for exPRession PR!
What did you do before? My career path has been rather unique since I started exPRession PR while still pursuing my bachelor’s degree. I’ve had the dream of owning my own company + being my own boss for years, so when I asked myself “Why wait to make my dream a reality?”, I couldn’t think of any reasons not to take the leap.
What did you think you’d be doing now whenever you were 10? Well, my 10 year old self would probably be a little disappointed I’m not on the path to being elected as the first woman president, but I think she would be proud that I’m doing what I love. That’s what is most important in life, after all.
Is exPRession PR your dream job? If not, what else is in the works? Absolutely! I created exPRession PR because I believe that dream jobs are not found - they are made! My brand encompasses branding consulting, career coaching, passionate writing, strategic social media planning - so many things I am passionate about in one amazing career. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Are you involved in any side hustles, ladypreneur collabs or baby projects? Tell us about them. It is my belief that a ladypreneur always has some sort of side project she is working on. I am currently working with Gloria Powell of On The Go With Glo on rebranding her popular travel inspired web-series. I’m also planning an online fundraising campaign with Lindsey Coco of Fashion Gives Back to raise money for the anti-bullying charity Love is Louder, a cause that is of the utmost importance for me. On a personal level, I’m collaborating with the talented Isabelle Creative who is creating illustrations for the poetry collection I have in the works. Side projects help me grow personally + professionally.
What does your daily routine consist of? Every day starts with the dreaded alarm, but I don’t allow myself to hit the snooze button ever. I then head off to my college courses. I also work as the Senior Communications Specialist of my university’s Academic Technology Services department, so I am either in meetings, drafting strategic plans, or sending out social media blasts. At the end of the day, I am working on either homework or exPRession PR. All of these responsibilities have me constantly connected all throughout the day. I’m so blessed to have great roommates, friends, and family to offer encouragement throughout the day, whether in person or over the phone. They keep me going.
How do you balance work and life and is that actually even possible? The elusive work-life balance is something I frequently have trouble with. However, it’s one of my top new year’s resolutions, so I will keep striving for this harmony.
You have to do it and you hate it – what is your least favorite task to do at exPRession PR? Anything that has to do with number crunching. Math to me is like garlic to a vampire. Need I say more?
What are your favorite business lady apps? I wouldn’t have achieved the success I currently have without Twitter. I check my Twitter feed before my text messages. It’s become a lifestyle! I also love photo editors like Afterlight and VSCO Cam to beautify blog visuals.
Top 5 favorite cities? I have been to over half of the states in the U.S. + love to travel, so this is a tough question. Tucson, Arizona will always be on my list because it’s my hometown + it’s a possible retirement spot for me. Like most ladypreneurs, I fell in love with New York City the moment my plane landed. The cultures, the food, the fashion, the skyline - it’s all so incredible. I am looking forward to visiting Atlanta this May as it is a city I am looking to possibly relocate to after I graduate in December. I have never travelled abroad, but think Venice, Italy + Athens, Greece would be the first cities I would visit.
Red, White or Sparkling? I just turned 21 a few months ago so I am still a wine newbie, but I enjoy white wines like Moscato the most so far.
Tell us the best place to eat in your city. If it’s your kitchen, share your favorite/best recipe. My friends + I love El Mazatlan, a small authentic Mexican restaurant located in my college-town. Just thinking about it makes me hungry! I’m still learning to cook with baby steps. Practice makes perfect, right?
Words to live by . . . “Creativity is intelligence having fun” is a quote that inspired me create exPRession PR, since my blog is a career resource for right-brainers. I also like the quote “Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated” because it’s a great reminder to surround yourself with positivity + encouragement at all times.
In 5 years you’ll be . . . happy doing what I love. I have no idea where I will be + what path my passions will lead me to, but I know I’ll never stop striving for success in all areas of my life.
On being a woman entrepreneur . . . Be confident, engage with others + build a positive community within your brand. Believe in yourself so no one else has to. Cultivate a strong work ethic early + know what you want. Never give in + always follow your gut because it’s right. Take the leap + create your dream today.
