Formal Title: Brittney Castro, CFP®, CRPC®, AAMS® CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™practitioner Founder & CEO of Financially Wise Women
What is Financially Wise Women? After working four years at Ameriprise Financial, a large financial planning firm, and three years with LPL Financial, an independent broker/dealer, I launched Financially Wise Women as a registered investment adviser, offering advisory services in the state of California. I focus my practice on helping people like me: busy professional and entrepreneurial women who are passionate about life. Financially Wise Women continues to grow and allow me to help even more individuals through my financial planning practice, online money class, YouTube channel videos, public speaking engagements, and live workshops. I have worked with hundreds of people and helped them love their money and take their financial lives to the next level. I look forward to helping you do the same.
After observing many other advisors communicate with women clients in counterproductive ways, making them feel more confused, shamed and humiliated, I knew something had to change. Women struggle with different fears and frustrations than men do. Women want clarity around their money and their financial strategies. They want to worry less, have more time to do the things they enjoy most, and they want a financial planner who listens to them and understands their unique goals and concerns.
I know this because this is what I want, too. I’ve been there: worried about money, stressed by the future, feeling misunderstood. It is my goal to change that for the women I work with.
What did you do before? I have always been a financial advisor and started my career right out of college at Ameriprise Financial. While there, I learned how to run a financial planning practice, how to excel as a financial planner, and that I loved financial planning.
What did you think you’d be doing at your current age whenever you were 10? I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, a business owner, and be on TV, so it makes sense that I’m an entrepreneur teaching people about money, personal finance and entrepreneurship in fun and innovative way. It took me until I was in my late 20’s to combine all of my dreams and passions in life and not be afraid of them, but finally I feel like I have my dream business and am working on my dream projects and it feels so amazing!
Is Financially Wise Women your dream job? If not, what else is in the works? Financially Wise Women is more than my dream job it is my DREAM career and life vision manifested. While working for Ameriprise I realized I did not fit into the traditional financial planning mold. Although I was successful, I was unhappy. I tried to fit in with an old-school model of financial planning and was not living an authentic life. I wanted to do things differently, and serve my clients in a way that made sense to me. I needed an environment that would allow my entrepreneurial side to shine and that would give me freedom and flexibility when working with clients. I also knew that I wanted to work on creative projects beyond FWW and now I am able to call myself serial entrepreneur and have partnerships with other companies to create even more of my dreams into a reality.
Are you involved in any side hustles, ladypreneur collabs or baby projects? Tell us about them. The FWW vision is huge! And I make it a habit to stay open and relevant for the right opportunities. I enjoy teaching workshops and I write for a few blogs as well as my own weekly blog on my website. I love to speak at events and empower women. I also have a production partnership that’s emerging so I can’t wait to share that with everyone when the time is right :)
What does your daily routine consist of? Wake up early, around 5-6 a.m., walk my dog, meditate, visualize, drink my coffee and eat a healthy breakfast. On certain days I do Hot yoga in the morning as well. I arrive into the office around 9 a.m. and then check in with my team and get started on my day. I break up my days so that certain days I am meeting with clients, and doing financial planning work, other days are allocated for business marketing and development and then I have a day for writing and filming videos and finally a day to have coffee meetings or call with other thought leaders and centers of influence. Having my non-negotiable morning activities and a very detailed calendar is what allows me to do so much in my career.
A day in the office of Brittney Castro is like? See above. Lots of client meetings, calls with thought leaders, writing content, filming videos, strategizing, emails, working on financial plans, creating and producing content for a new show I am involved in, reading, lots of reading about business, marketing, finance, etc.
How do you balance work and life and is that actually even possible? That’s a great question. You know… There’s no specific formula. I believe everyone is different. You have to do what works best for you. I find that owning my own practice has helped me stay true to my values and lifestyle. As I mentioned before Financially Wise Women is a movement. We’re much more than just a financial planning firm. I believe that being an example of what I teach and envision is important so for me it is possible. Now, prioritizing is necessary, and time management and consistency help balance work and life. I’m kind of a routine girl, but I’m learning not to be stuck into it. Changing it up every now and then helps to keep it fun! And FWW is all about the fun!
What are your favorite business lady apps? Oh I am finally loving Pinterest now. Is that an app? I like to follow fashion posts as I am getting into this whole fashion thing and learning how to creatively put together outfits that are a reflection of who I am.
